UC Davis Facilities Management and the UC Davis Police Department invite you to take part in the annual Campus Safety Lighting Walk on Wed., Jan. 21, from 5 - 8 p.m.

Now in its 16th year, the Campus Safety Lighting Walk is an Aggie tradition. During this guided walk, students, faculty, staff, and community members walk in groups to identify potential campus safety issues like dark sidewalks, overgrown trees, uneven pavements, and more.

The annual effort is an invaluable source of insights, and participant observations lead to significant improvements. In fact, feedback from last year’s event directly resulted in 115 repairs on campus!

The UC Davis Facilities Management exterior lighting team, a dedicated group of six who maintain more than 13,000 lights and five traffic signal intersections, use feedback from the Campus Safety Lighting Walk to guide improvements where they are needed most.

Observations from the walk are also shared with the Campus Security Improvement Project, a multi-year effort investing $20 million through 2029 to upgrade lighting, security technology, and overall campus safety.

“Everyone plays a part in making campus safe,” says UC Davis Police Chief Joe Farrow. “The Campus Safety Lighting Walk is one of my favorite events because it turns that idea into action. We walk, we talk, and we make the campus better together.”

It's also rewarding for participants to see how the campus is improved, with their help. “The Campus Safety Lighting Walk is a clear example of how community input leads to meaningful improvements,” said Clint Lord, associate vice chancellor of UC Davis Facilities Management. “We value this partnership, and everyone who gets involved helps strengthen our campus environment.”
