Team Spotlight: Controls
This quarter we are highlighting the Controls Team at Facilities Management (FM) and the vital role they play on the UC Davis Campus! The team is made up of an involved and experienced team that prioritizes campus comfort and helping customers. In order to learn more about the ins and outs of the team, we sat down with Justin Lewis and Mike Campos.
Made up of 12 members, the Controls Team includes four controls engineers, an HVAC controls supervisor, and seven HVAC Controls technicians. Their team consists of a range of experiences working the field - ranging from entry level technicians to fully experienced ones. Between the 12 of them, they share around 192 years of experience, averaging around 16 years of experience each.
The Controls Team works to respond to and address customer reports about rooms on campus being too hot or too cold. The crew works to evaluate the operation of the systems, assigns a level of urgency, and prioritizes the order in which the issue will be resolved. Lewis and Campos explained that the team prioritizes human safety, animal safety, and research based tasks and requests that they receive first. Their main goal consists of properly maintaining all research, academic and classroom facilities on the UC Davis campus.
The team also works on various ongoing projects that often consist of retrofitting and updating legacy control systems. In addition to this, they collaborate with Facilities’ project managers and with Design & Construction Management teams to ensure that system installations and modifications are functioning properly.
The Controls Team plays an active role in maintaining facilities in accordance with industry standards and regulations. The team is constantly engaging with these standards and keeping up to date with the most recent regulations, even setting them on their own at times. They are also proactive about staying up-to-date with new developments and advancements in the field. The department ensures that technicians regularly attend training, aiding less experienced workers in gaining valuable work skills and more experienced technicians in staying updated. They also regularly fill out evaluation forms for their coworkers in order to maintain their high standard of service.
Thank you so much to the Controls Team for all the hard work that you do at FM!
