Team Spotlight: Steam Systems

At UC Davis Facilities Management, the “Steam Shop” as part Mechanical Systems Group plays a critical role in maintaining the university’s complex steam, heating and chilled water hydronic systems. Comprised of a skilled team of 12, including pipefitters, boiler technicians, machinists, and insulators, the crew brings a combined 200 years of experience to campus operations.

The team’s diverse expertise allows them to handle a wide range of tasks, from routine maintenance to emergency repairs. Their core responsibility is keeping the university’s steam systems, boilers, condensate return lines, and associated piping running efficiently.

Tasks are carefully prioritized to ensure urgent needs are addressed immediately. “Tasks are dispatched over the radio based on priority,” explained Jacob Bice, the shop Supervisor. “Medium- and low-priority tasks are assigned according to each technician’s current workload, and I review the queue daily to make sure nothing slips through the cracks.”

Emergencies are handled with quick, coordinated action. Recently, a rusted heating hot water line caused flooding in a mechanical room. The team quickly shut down the affected systems, called in additional support, and issued an emergency notice to customers. After completing repairs, they safely brought the system back online and communicated updates to affected parties.

Innovation is embedded in the Steam Shop’s DNA. “To repair or install new piping quickly and permanently, the shop has invested in modern, industry-leading Pro-Press and Mega-Press pipe fitting technologies, along with advanced training for the team. These fittings require minimal preparation and eliminate the need for electric or gas welding in occupied spaces, enhancing both safety and efficiency throughout our facilities,” Bice shared.

The Steam Shop maintains compliance with industry and campus standards by collaborating closely with project managers. They also stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in piping and tools through regular vendor demonstrations, ensuring their practices remain cutting-edge.

With decades of combined experience and a proactive approach to both routine and emergency maintenance, the Steam Shop is essential to keeping UC Davis facilities safe, efficient, and reliable.
